St. John of Rila the Wonderworker is the most renowned Bulgarian saint and hermit, considered the heavenly protector of the Bulgarian people and the founder of the Rila Monastery.
He was born around 876 AD in the village of Skrino, located in the Osogovo Mountains near the Struma River. After becoming an orphan, John worked as a shepherd. From a young age, he showed a strong inclination towards a spiritual life and joined a nearby monastery, likely the “St. Demetrius” Monastery on Mount Ruen. There, he learned to read and write and became acquainted with the Holy Scriptures and the works of the Church Fathers.
Over time, he took monastic vows and withdrew into the wilderness, living in various secluded places, including a cave and even inside the hollow of a tree, dedicating himself to prayer and fasting. As the years passed, disciples gathered around him, leading to the founding of the Rila Monastery, which became a center of spirituality and education.
Venerable John of Rila passed away on August 18, 946 AD, leaving behind his “Testament,” a spiritual guideline for his followers.
